About 49,500 people took their own lives last year in the U.S., the highest number ever. That's according to new government data posted Thursday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has not yet calculated a suicide rate for the year. But available data suggests suicides are more common in the U.S. than at any time since the dawn of World War II. Experts caution that suicide is complicated, and that recent increases might be driven by higher rates of depression or limited availability of mental health services. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention says a main driver is the growing availability of guns.

Prosecutors have begun making their case for a life sentence for a Michigan teenager who killed four students at his high school in 2021. They introduced dark journal entries written by Ethan Crumbley, chilling video and testimony from a wounded staff member. Molly Darnell was one of seven people wounded that day. Darnell says she “locked eyes” with a boy in baggy clothes raising a gun toward her. After she was shot, she scrambled to lock her office door. Crumbley's attorneys acknowledge that he's in line for a long prison sentence, but they want him to be eligible for parole. The hearing resumes Friday.
Ethan Crumbley admitted to carrying out the shooting but, because he was 15 at the time, he can't automatically be given a life sentence.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation Wednesday that prohibits mental health professionals from using so-called conversion therapy on LGBTQ minors. Michigan becomes the 22nd state to implement the ban on conversion therapy. That was defined by lawmakers as any practice or treatment by a mental health professional that seeks to change an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity. But it does not include counseling to assist people undergoing a gender transition. The Democratic governor said banning what she called the “horrific practice,” of conversion therapy was necessary to making Michigan a place “where you can be who you are.”

President Joe Biden’s administration has announced new rules meant to push insurance companies to increase their coverage of mental health treatments. The new regulations announced Tuesday would require insurers to study whether their customers have equal access to medical and mental health benefits and to take remedial action, if necessary. The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act requires that insurers provide the same level of coverage for both mental and physical health care. The rules, if finalized, would force insurers to study patient outcomes to ensure the benefits are administered equally, taking into account their provider network and reimbursement rates and whether prior authorization is required for care.

North Carolina's Republican House speaker says a sweeping education proposal that would take away power from superintendents and the State Board of Education is unlikely to advance this session. The 26-page bill would require parental permission for children to access libraries, extracurricular activities and mental health services. House Speaker Tim Moore said he does not expect it to move this session. There has been “some pushback within the caucus about some provisions concerning librarians or books," he said Thursday. But a provision requiring teachers to alert parents if their child self-identifies as a gender different from their sex assigned at birth could still become law this year.
