Bills safety Damar Hamlin is preparing for the next step to resume his career by suiting up in Buffalo's preseason-opening game against the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday. The game will mark the first time Hamlin appears in a competitive setting since the 25-year-old went into cardiac arrest and needed to be resuscitated on the field in Cincinnati in January. Coach Sean McDermott told The Associated Press that Hamlin is scheduled to play.

Cameron Smith was determined to erase memories of his worst finish of the year last week. He did just that at LIV Golf-Bedminster. Smith shot 66 and has a one-shot lead over Charles Howell III at Trump National. Smith finished 35th last week at The Greenbrier. This is his first time playing the Trump course at Bedminster. The Australian didn't join LIV Golf until a month after the circuit played at Trump National last year.

Lucas Glover is handling the mud and slop one day and oppressive heat the next. Glover shot a 64 and has a one-shot lead over Jordan Spieth in the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Spieth had four bogeys in his round of 68. There are 16 players within four shots of the lead. That includes the likes of Tommy Fleetwood, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy. Glover is coming off a win last week in the Wyndham Championship.

IndyCar championship leader Alex Palou has changed his mind again and informed McLaren Racing he will not be joining the team at the end of this season. In a letter sent to the Arrow McLaren Racing employees by boss Zak Brown, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press, Brown wrote that Palou “has no intention of honoring his contract with our Arrow McLaren IndyCar team for the 2024 season and beyond.”

There’s a golfer hailing from America’s South and with a passion for hunting who is running away with the British Open thanks to precise driving and a red-hot putter. Ally Ewing is putting up a good impression of Brian Harman as she goes for a first major title this week at Walton Heath. The No. 39-ranked Ewing rolled in six birdies in her first 11 holes and shot 6-under 66 to establish a five-stroke lead at the end of the second round of the Women’s British Open.

Some of the best competition in the NFL this summer takes place on practice fields. More teams are holding joint practices and holding their star players out of preseason games. It’s been a growing trend since the preseason schedule was shortened to three games. A total of 27 teams are scheduled to participate in joint sessions this year, up from 23 last season. Thirteen teams are holding joint practices with two clubs, up from seven last year. The joint sessions allow coaches to prepare their starters for the season in a more controlled atmosphere with less fear of injury.

Georgia’s new offensive coordinator is hardly a stranger in these parts. Mike Bobo played quarterback for the Bulldogs back in the 1990s. He worked on Mark Richt’s coaching staff for more than a decade, including a lengthy stint calling the plays. Despite all that familiarity, Bobo might be under more scrutiny than anyone associated with the two-time defending national champs. His task is straightforward yet daunting: Keep Georgia’s offense rolling toward an unprecedented third straight title.

The realignment frenzy in college athletics is all about football. And all that money, of course. There is barely a consideration of how these seismic changes will affect every other team on campus. From grueling road trips to missed classes to mental health challenges, it’s hard to see anything positive in all this dollar sign-driven nonsense if you’re an athlete who doesn’t happen to suit up for the pigskin squad. While football is driving the realignment train, it’s the sport that will be least affected by coast-to-coast conferences and travel times between member schools.

Tyrese Haliburton loves road games. Few things in basketball make him happier than going into a hostile environment and hearing the sweet sound of disappointed silence. And as part of USA Basketball’s World Cup team, he’s finding like-minded people. No longer the No. 1 ranked nation in the world according to FIBA — Spain overtook the Americans last November, sliding the U.S. to No. 2 and off the top of the list for the first time in 12 years — and coming off a seventh-place finish in the last World Cup four years ago, this U.S. team knows there’s no shortage of doubters entering this tournament. Haliburton likes it that way.

Gregg Popovich didn't want to be inducted into Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame until the players that helped his teams win NBA championships had already gone in. With Tony Parker joining him, the NBA's winningest coach is ready to be celebrated for an impact on the sport that is now global. Popovich, a five-time NBA champion, Olympic gold medal-winning coach and the league’s all-time leader in coaching wins, will join fellow NBA champions Dwyane Wade, Pau Gasol, Dirk Nowitzki and Tony Parker, along with longtime coaching mentee Becky Hammon as headliners of the 2023 Basketball Hall of Fame class.

Remco Evenepoel gave Belgium its first men's time trial world champion on Friday, holding off two-time champion Filippo Ganna and young upstart Josh Tarling on a brutal ride to Stirling Castle. Evenepoel won the world road race title last year but was unable to defend it last weekend on a course that hardly suited his style. Evenepoel had been targeting the time trial all season, and his performance in winning it at the Giro d'Italia confirmed his status as one of the favorites.
